How does one go about getting into this career? I have always been curious.

Do you just walk into your local fire department and say you want to sign up?

All you have to do is apply online. It's typically a 6 month hiring process, and they only accept applications 2 times a year.

I applied back in December, and took the written exam at the end of January.

@Tommy, thanks mane!

it's not the same everywhere though. I wish they did it like that here.

Here they compile a probationary hire list once every 2 years or so. If you get on the hire list but are low on the list, it pretty much means you won't get a job. Typically top 16 will get a job within that 2 year span. Then after the 2 years is up, they rinse and repeat. Sometimes they only need 8 guys in that 2 years (it's based on how many retire) so it can be extremely competitive, but that is true for pretty much anywhere.

Seems dumb that weather can factor into a test

Everyone should be tested at same conditions

make perfect sense imo, they are going to be working in all sort of weather conditions, they have to be ready for everything.

Starting salary without a college degree is $39,124 as a Firefighter I. They'll pay for your school, and give you a 5% raise for an associates, and 10% for a bachelors.

Then there's tons of other options, classes, specific fields, and such that offer more money. My buddy has been a firefighter in Charlotte for 5 years and makes roughly $55,000 at 25 years old. My best friend's uncle makes just short of $100,000 and he's been on the job for almost 20 years.

Not to mention you work 10 days a month.
1 on, 1 off, 1 on, 2 off, 1 on, 4 off. Repeat.

So plenty of time for a second job/hobby. It's also more of a lifestyle and not a job. It's something I'm excited to spend the next 30 years of my life doing. Not a day I'll wake up regretting what I do for a living.

That is badass. Didn't read past your comment, but to find your passion is the greatest. And it sounds like you'll have freedom with that schedule.

Edit: sorry you failed the test though, may isn't too far away at least.
