I was at a conference a couple of weeks ago and one of the talks was given by a writer and one of his main points was to become a "preacher" or "politician" for science. One of the biggest things the lay-people see is distrust in science based mostly on lack of communication and understanding. I really hope beyond almost everything I can be in a position to make a true difference in people's lives through truly COMMUNICATING.

This is definitely why I look up to Neil DeGrasse with such awe, speaking to congress, always dropping knowledge in a way people can understand, etc
