Am I the only one who finds the olympia extremely boring? I enjoy seeing the physiques but a few pics after the contest will hold me over.
Maybe I just don't understand the art of it enough. I know I don't see the detail like hardcover bb lovers do.
I think the actual presentation of the Olympia needs work. They need to get on mainstream tv for bodybuilding's most important competition, and they need to do it in a way that would build a bigger audience for the sport.
A lot of people think it's a freakshow, or they don't get it, or, like you, they don't really see the details or they find it boring. I think a lot of that would change if the competition had a better mode of presentation. I don't expect bodybuilding to go truly mainstream but the bodybuilding community could do a lot better when it comes to promoting and marketing itself, or at least in terms of getting its message out there (what it's really about, why it matters, etc.)
I see it this way, and maybe it will help anyone who is unconvinced see it in a new way ... I always appreciated a great physique, and after I moved for the billionth time as a kid, I decided to start lifting weights. It wasn't about fitting in (but it did help my sports performance) or even about looking good. It was about creating something that was mine. I could have my own little world and I could work as hard as I wanted and do it how I wanted. I was 13 then, and by any standard I didn't look like a bodybuilder. But I was hooked and when I did start seeing results, it felt really good. If you look at the little differences between the bodies of bodybuilders, you have to imagine that those differences cost thousands of reps. There's an entire aethetics going on and often you can see the plan behind the body. I love the details of bodybuilding. They follow a lot of sacrifice. I haven't done boydbuilding in
years but once you start to hear the stories of bodybuilders, I think it's hard not to be intrigued by the entire sport. The best intro is probably to watch
Pumping Iron. If it's not interesting to you, then I'd say it's fine to tune the whole enterprise out.
