Isn't the income tax in Norway relatively high? Some where around 50%?
On a global basis it might be high, but compared to other European countries (like Waw pointed out; Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Austria, Germany, France etc where the income tax is +/- half your income) the income tax is fairly moderate.
a $70,000 income will pay 36% tax while a $90,000 income will pay roughly 38% tax.
for just over one third your income you get:
* free healthcare
* free education up to Master degree level
* a government benefit system giving you a minimum wage if you are unfit or too lazy to actually work
* free dental care til age 18
* 5-10 fully paid sick days and in some careers you get up to 30; my friend uses all 30 every year to party during weekends and still get paid
* full payment in whatever career if you get an injury that prohibits you from working after you started a career in e.g. painting, plumber, electrician etc
* 2 years paid maternity leave, couple months paid paternity leave
* roughly 2/3 of your net income during your career you get in return as a retirement bonus. if you earned say, $45,000/year post tax you'll get $30,000/year until the day you die.
+ all the stuff that every country gets like infrastructure, military, roads, etc although we have the shittiest roads in all of Europe.
