I'll take a stab at it though. Hasn't balla always been training for hypertrophy? I was under the impression that an ATG squat has more muscle recruitment then a parallel squat, and certainly more than an X" above parallel squat. I could be wrong on either points, but from what i've learned this is what i thought. If I'm wrong about this, what benefits would gain strength/size wise from not doing a full ROM squat?
You are right about that statement.
However, the extra few inches into deep mode are not worth the excess patellar strain. Eventually the contractive gain will be slight.
Powelifters need full RoM to meet contest requirements. Hyp trainees do not. This is the sole exercise where the biomechanic disadvantage of the given joint at full contraction offers too much strain in return for its merit.
Not that I'm under any impression a person who squats once every blue moon will see any sort of notable sarcoplasmic gain, but that is a tale for another time.
