I know it's one of the stances in America, and for example Simmons from WSBB says you shouldn't be teaching someone how to squat 600 if you can't squat 600, but to me that's utter bullshit. Olympian coaches are more often than not simply the best in their fields, not ex athletes.
And even taking into account that, that tattoo artist is kinda off to me. You can keep tattooing all your life, but somebody may have been one of the most experienced squatters, and not being able to squat heavy because he's simply too old... Wouldn't you pay heed to his advice though?
In my opinion, respecting somebody's knowledge or ability to train basing the self on his performance or physique is a great error.
