Its been all about  me.  I would appreciate it if you could answer a question for my cancer surviving mother :)

50 Years old
5'7"
160lbs
30% bf guess based on some dumb digital scale

She just conquered breast cancer and wants to lose all this weight!  She signed up for a half marathon in October and needs to train properly for that.  She used to run marathons so knows how to do it.  Her back has had a few cortisone injections and her knees arent what they used to be but she is driven.

Her current workout consists of this:
100 crunches 6 days a week
25 push ups
20 minutes on the elliptical

Our family eats very healthy for the most part.  I am on some of your diets to give you an idea :)
She uses my fitness pal to keep track of cal intake but is not sure of cal output.  I told her that her current workout is probably only maintaining at best (as a guess).
She has been doing this for 5-6 weeks and has not lost a pound.
She is a chef and can whip up anything she needs.  So in case theres just recipes somewhere that are good ideas so you dont have to type out 1001 things :)

She takes:
2000 mg fish oil
Vitamin E generic size pill (1-2)
Centrum Silver for women over 50
And its important to note that she takes Tamoxifin as a result of the breast cancer. It acts as an estrogen and progesterone blocker.  She has to continue taking this.  The doctor, who is not a nutritionist said you could eat crackers and water and gain weight with this.  Not sure to the validity of that.

We would very much appreciate it if you could whip up a sure fire weight loss/half marathon training and or diet program for a 50 year old woman trying to get it back.

Thank you! Thank you!

Hello there!

I would be very glad to help your mother achieve her goals and stay health.

Before we go any further, I would like to mention a few things:

1. Keto Diets have been shown to greatly reduce the onset of recurring cancer in patients.
2. Antioxidants, particularly Vitamin C, as well as other vitamins such as d-3, have been shown to greatly reduce repeat cancer risk.
3. Greatly increasing water intake (somewhere in the area of 1 gal per day for a woman of her size), has also been shown to greatly reduce repeat cancer risk.
4. An herb called Maca has been shown to greatly increase fat loss as well as improve mood and overall sense of well-being in female breast cancer patients (including those on Tomaxafin)

That being said, I can assure you that if you mother is interested and willing to try Keto, as well as interested in a new exercise plan, and trying different supplements, she will dramatically lose weight, feel a LOT better, and ultimately be a lot healthier and greatly reduce the risk of any further cancer from showing up.

Before I develop a plan for her, please ask if she would be willing to do the above - especially the keto part (0 carbs 13 days in a row, followed by a carb day on the 14th day, then 6 days of 0 carbs, and a 7th day of carbs, repeating over and over)

what i mean is right now im 175 lbs. i think im at around 17-18% body fat, and i wanna get to around 12. so if i was to take 6% off to get to 11-12%, i would need to lose approximately 10 lbs-11 lbs (175x.06 = 10.5) to get to a weight of 165ish. so i shouldnt use 165 as my bmr? i should use 175?

Ah I see what you are saying. Yes, you use your goal weight as the BMR.

edit:

however, if you are taking your CURRENT BMR and removing 500 cals, you will still be on a substantial deficit with exercise....so the speed of the cut is the only issue here.

ah that makes sense. thanks. and a quick cutting question. while i know u dont need cardio to lose fat, is it better to add it in? im on a strength routine like i've said which is working well for me, but on days i can, i might add some cardio. i like the elliptical, does that actually work? is steady paced lower intensity cardio better? or is HIIT like interval sprints on the treadmill better

HIIT is superior, however the method that you use doesn't matter. Eliptical, Bike, Treadmill, etc.

Yo raynor,

I have a pain in my chest about an inch off of my upper sternum in my left pec running parallel to my sternum. It's kind of a dull stabbing pain when I breath, relax my shoulders/rotate my shoulders/chest in certain positions.

Is it from overextending during bench? I've gotten similar pains before, sometimes after heavy dips or db fly days.

I don't think my forms bad but I've gotten similar pains a couple times since '08, and it's kinda annoying as it irritates me throughout the day and might last for a couple days

This is fairly normal and can be intercostal muscle microtearing, or in extreme cases a sprain. This is typically caused by over-exertion or improper form on chest day.

Just take time to recover and next time when working chest, try and pay better attention to form (keep the elbows in on bench press for example), and once you hit failure, no need to keep going.

Your post is all over the place....let me guide you back here:

I said :"Do not expect to be building mass with circuit stations compared to with a solid strength training routine with weights."

Secondly, yes, until FAILURE. You will definitely have to do that for your desired effect.

You need to be on a good weight training program for an extended period of time to reap the benefits. Don't expect solid gains without sticking to a good plan.

Oh I see sorry about that. I'm just trying to have 2 different work out plans. One for in town when I have weights and one for in camp where I don't have weights. I do 5x5 stronglifts in town and am going to start your circuit stations in camp.

She doesn't feel that cutting out carbs completely would be doable. (Keto requires complete compliance doesn't it? )
Maybe it would be better to go down the no keto road.
About the water - she was taking detrol and it was making her have to go to the pee A Lot. So university of michigan doctor said limit water to 50oz a day unless sweating a lot. Just a small fyi.

To answer your question- I don't think she would be able to 100% comply to a keto routine. Hopefully she can still obtain her goals! ;)
