Do you feel this way because of your personal experiences, or were they a result of your formal education?
Both.
Formal education teaches that natural body symmetry tends to be superior and reduces risk of injury.
Personal experience teaches that neutrality tends to build additional strength and more complete gains.
Weight lifting shoes may help give you extra on a lift - just like power suit, bench shirt, etc. However, these items are a tool used for NUMBERS only, and not true gains (both strength and size).
The only way to train that gives you the absolute complete strength and size benefit is to train as naturally as possible with very little, if any, artificial assistance. For example, my crutch happens to be wrist wraps because of the tremendous injuries I've sustained over the years to my wrists/forearms. Without wrist wraps, the pain from straight bar exercises would hinder my progress greatly.
