Because it's not just pure tension. It's a contraction, followed by relaxation, repeated multiple times until failure. The duration of the reps are more beneficial for hypertrophy when performed slowly, however.

But you need to have a good blend of both slow concentrated reps with proper form, and also enough repetitions of contractions with relaxations.

However, a certain number of anything is usually used as a baseline for beginner and intermediate lifters.

Advanced lifters know that instinct pays off much better, and training until you "feel" a certain way is key - vs training until a certain number is achieved.

This feeling you talked of; is that the pump? Or muscle fatigue? Or something else

Edit; for chest days for example, I do pushups at the very end, if I can do more than 10 I go back and do another set of something, will stop when I can hardly do a single pushup

Us this what you mean by feeling yourself? No pun intended

Also raynlord,

I lost a scary amount of weight in just 17 days of no lifting and poor diet (holiday), then was violently ill for 2 days

I'm down 18 lbs (wtf?)

I was taken back, almost depressed. What gives? My gains.... Were all water weight? No creatine maybe a factor?

No, but I do have a circuit stations workout, which is a version of cross-training.

The pump is usually at the height of the contraction. The relaxation point usually feels the most fatigue.

What you described is a version of listening to your own body. When advanced lifters do their routines, number of reps only comes up as a baseline for which to determine if they achieved more of something than the previous workout(s)

1. No creatine will lead to lack of saturation of the muscles - you can lose up to 5 lbs there.
2. Certainly there is probably a small fat loss of around 2-3 lbs + another 2-3 lbs of moisture from the fat - total up to 6 lbs.
3. After being sick for 2 days, you lose a ton of water and any food your body would normally be storing on a regular basis. Up to 10 lbs can be lost in this process.

I highly doubt you've lost any significant amount of lean mass

Hey ray

- been reading alot of protein intake and am writing a paper for nutrition class on it ...

I've been reading that around 1.4.1.7g per KG bodyweight is sufficient/ plenty of protein for stength training / athletes ..this number varies depending on source but that is about the amount recommended ...

However , I find it impossible to even do that .

For 170lbs and 3600 calories that would be

131 gs protein per day on the high end - that's only 524 calories

All of my carb sources like pasta potatos etc / fat sources like milk almonds etcs

All have protein in them --- I would have to eat like 1oz servings of meat with my meals lmao

I have already cut it down from 5oz servings of meat to 3oz . And that is multiple times per day.

I jus find it near impossible to eat only 1.7g/kg in bodyweight
To my understanding excess protein is no harm to the body but
Am I sacrificing carbs / fats with too much protein ?

Or is more protein needed when one is in such a caloric surplus / high BMR

I seem to be in a sticking point in my bench press where the arms begin to straighten out prior to locking out.

I've never done isolation exercises for my triceps, do you suggest any? my arms seem to be the reason im failing at my bench press.

OK...you need to be a bit more specific.

You made a statement, and didn't ask a question. I have no idea about your body type, height/weight, medical conditions, gym access, etc.
