Muscle catabolization can you explain that to me?
When the body utilizes lean tissue for energy.
This occurs only when the following are satisfied:
1. A caloric deficit
2. A caloric requirement (usually in amino acids and glycogen) exists beyond the supplied calories in reference to lean tissue repair - and glycogen is fully depleted from the lean tissue.
AND/OR
3. Lean tissue is used/torn (microtears) during the fast once glycogen stores are low or fully depleted.
OR
4. A caloric deficit for a long enough period of time for all glycogen stores to be depleted and no ketosis is present.
Fasting for 20 hours if you do nothing but sit around will not burn lean tissue. However fasting for 20 hours when being highly active and working out can and usually will burn muscle tissue unless a massive amount of glycogen is replenished immediately post workout...and the initial workout was not enough to cause significant microtears the muscles.
