appreciate the prompt reply, however one more question for you before i head to bed,

my immediate fitness goals as of the moment is to get those washboard abs,

i weigh about 158 lbs, and about 178 cm in height

what do you recommend for losing body fat % ? (circuit training?, swimming? HIIT?)
and what is a good ab workout routine?

is p90x ab ripper x effective in terms of sculpting the abs? or should i do those ab machines with higher weight?

Abs Workout Routine

Secondly, I would recommend Swimming above all else, with HIIT as a second choice.

what would be the best way for someone to start out dieting and exercising if they weigh just under 400 lbs and don't really do anything close to exercising.

30 minutes of light exercise, 5 days a week.

Reduce calories to around 2,500 per day from clean sources, monitor sodium intake to 2,000 mg per day.

The light exercise should be brisk walking, stationary biking, or swimming (if possible) - using dumbbells to do general workouts would also be acceptable.

Continue this routine until about 100 pounds are lost. When in the 300 pound range, they can begin 45-60 minutes of exercise a day for 5 days a week, and also begin to do resistance training more seriously

Furthermore, diet will go down to 2,000 calories when the 300 pound mark is hit and stay there until the fat loss goal is achieved.

Yes and no.

You need low body fat % in order to have visible shredded abdominals. However, if you have low BF% and no visible abs, you need to train abs harder just as you would any muscle group.

For your purposes, if you are 10-12% BF or less, you should have visible abs.

In totality, you need to burn more calories than you take in. It also helps to lower carbs in general and stay away from any impact carbs (high glycemic carbs like sugar and white flour or white rice) except for immediately post workout.

Here's an excellent plan to follow if you are interested:
