if you go slightly back, they're a result of the roman occupation of israel and called it "palestinia provinicia". but of the historic claim, we've been here for the past 2000 years, and have had Israel as our sovereignty 3 times altogether throughout that time. there's no question, not even by the Qur'an itself that Israel is the land of the jews ("until the day of judgement" translated). the palestinians have had their identity born out of an ancient occupation (ironic as fuck, isn't it?), and have zero claim to Israel based on that single merit.
the harsh answer is that NOBODY wants them back. they're refugees, outcasts, rejects of arab societies all around the ME.
