Ive had more issues with squating form than lunges so i guess i was speaking from my experience, rather than a more practical outlook

You should squat first during every leg day and lunges can be an accessory lift, imo.

Start with squatting just the bar, or even bodyweight/no bar, until you become comfortable with form. Squats are important and will change your life
