On toes = bad. Shoes with heel = less stretch.

They aren't trying to do a "deep squat" - it's a back stretch

Not really

I just tried to squat atg (max depth) and I look like they do (back rounded, butt wink) no matter how much I try to lift my chest. It's a mobility issue (or genetics...).

Yeah if I place my feet wider and ankles out more I have less rounding. I just don't see how to fix that.

According to Bret contreras it's partially due to anatomy.

E/ then goes on to say ankle flexibility is one of the most important points.

If I get on my toes I look like a perfect Asian. On heels I look like a cat arching its back lmao

Yeah it can be a mobility/flexibility issue.

But the reason bret posted this particular picture was to illustrate a stretch

Read something about hip socket depth that can affect your ability to squat with straight back atg.

It can be a lot of things. Mobility is the primary one but practicing this every day will improve the mobility side of it.

Another issue people can have is the people with longer legs and shorter torsos require more mobility to do the same depth. Especially those with longer femurs.

I have slightly longer legs than the average guy but I also have longer femurs relative to the lower half of my leg so I require a fair bit of mobility to do this. It's pretty annoying.

It also causes a weird hinge with your knees and hips when hitting the bottom of the lift so your knees don't extend too far forward past the knee.

I've only ever seen one lifter do it and it looks weird af but given his anatomy it was the way he had to do it.

I wish I remembered who the lifter was. He was a smaller guy. It was a youtube video
