Lets be honest, the only good thing about p90x is that its written down and op can follow a routine without doing random workouts.
He will benefit from any workout, p90x aswell, since he's totally untrained. What will happen is that if he will stick to current diet he will eventually lose weight and build some strength but mainly endurance.
From what ive red hes more interested in building muscle so its a good start to get to know basic rows, pushups, squats and inverted pullups.
Tl:dr p90 will make him lose weight, thats how i see it.
Pick anything you feel like doing, consistency iż the first step.
