/co-sign on these for the following two reasons:

1. The practicality of using these skill-sets in an "in the wild" environment.

2. The widespread availability of both, so you can continue training once you move.

Yes this and what they said. I'll add Muay Thai as well. Jeet Kune Do if you can find it in your city. That would be my #1.

American boxing is one of the best because it teaches you how to defend and guard yourself. Jujitsu helps when the fight goes to the ground. Having striking and grappling as a base is a good start.

I don't think in a few months time that I'd be up to a level to live spar.

You should be. Any boxing gym worth it's salt, you should be in the ring with headgear and a mouthpiece inside of a month.

Sparring is a different animal than an actual fight. Yes, your opponent is trying to punch you in the melon, but neither of you *should* be going 100%. You don't learn anything by just getting steam-rolled by the guys better than you.

It's more just for peace of mind, especially cuz I want to travel to a lot of 3rd world countries soon. I'm not too keen on continuing training until I get home a few years from now.

Again, boxing is not the only answer for self-defense, but it's a skill-set you can put to use immediately upon learning.

Do not fuck around with the locals in Bali / vietnam / thailand

PROTIP: Just give 'em the damn wallet. Don't get shanked over something you can replace.

PROTIP # 2: If you're *really* paranoid that you might land in some sketchy areas: carry a fake / decoy wallet. srs.

Fill it with those fake placeholder credit cards you get in junk mail, and some small bills. They stick you up for your wallet, you toss the decoy and run. At a glance, it looks like they scored, and they run the other way.

Boxing
Muay Thai
Kick Boxing
Juijitsu
Judo
Wrestling

Can't really go wrong with any of those. Just depends if you want to learn a striking/grappling art.
