If you are overweight, you can still lose weight while eating a lot of calories... if that makes any sense

i can bulk on 3300-3500 calories, and gain size while you might still lose weight at those calories

as a previous fat guy, just go on a slow cut 1-2 lbs a week and you will gain size when losing the fat

some studies have shown that new lifters were able to lose fat and put on muscle eating at, or slightly below maintenance. however, I haven't read anything supporting a typical deficit of 20%, outside of the obese category

just keep calories a little higher and do more cardio( 40 mins every 2 days or 3-4 times a week)

dont cut all carbs or do some stupid diet where you lose 50 lbs in a month

this, basically.

@op, noob gains are essentially neuromuscular adaptations.

The question is vague, what are the goals of the person? Long term as well. Because while cutting, unless you're obese, you wont develop muscle.
If youre fat and just wanna drop some bf and get a little stronger.. which is more important? You will gain some 'strength' (efficiency of the movements, moreso) by cutting, but not nearly as much as if you were bulking.

Keep in mind that we don't really even know what neuromuscular adaptations are precisely at this time

I ask because my brother has been trying to lose weight and now after years of trying to get him interested, he wants to start lifting. No matter what I say to him though, he wants to continue losing weight.

He is like 170ish, maybe 6 feet tall.

170 at 6 feet is probably what like 10% bf which isn't that bad.

But good for him for finally wanting to lift

I'm 6'1 and never want to go back to 170. I sit at 190 now with a desire to eventually hit 210

My little brother is 160-170 and 6ft too. He lifted w/ me a year or so ago for a couple months, never really stuck with it and tried tho. He was like me in the sense he had a bad body image despite pulling chicks regularly so he just starved himself and got to his current weight lookin like an albino Ethiopian. Hoping he comes around and wants to look at least healthy but it's outta my control. How old is your bro?

He's 27. Played rec sports up until like middle school and lived a sedentary lifestyle ever since.

I'm not kidding when I say no muscle mass haha. He has a pretty big gut.
