just looked up an article

idk if exactly related but i skimmed it very briefly so u can maybe check it out if u want

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3578432/

in my opinion, lifting weights requires very little cardio
nfl would require good endurance and the ability to move quickly and in a smart manner. somewhat training can help, but talent plays a role as well

just cuz ur strong at doing quick lifts under 1 min long, does not completely carry over to performing well in a sport. at least not any sport i can think of thats similar to nfl

edit: nevermind that article seems completely irrelevant lol.... but whatever health related, i keep it in my post... ops

It doesn't matter how big you are, how strong you are, how much you can lift, etc. in professional sports. It's called athleticism...lifting weights doesn't require athleticism. Not to mention professional athletes are mostly very intelligent (complex playbooks, etc.). I'm not saying power lifters are dumb, but professional sports are both physically AND mentally demanding.

Oh and you can't take steroids in professional sports.

So some points I'd like to chime in without any evidence to back up my words:

Steroids:
Pretty sure professional players still take / have taken steroids.

Coordination:
Take the pool of Strongman's, surely some of them are in fact 'coordinated' they just do not know it due to their devotion at a young age lifting weights.
I would say coordination is probably the only thing that practice can't really make perfect, but I don't expect Strongman's to become wide receivers or play baseball.

Intelligence:
I'd bet professional power lifters are on the same level as professional athletes, have you ever listened to a professional athlete speak?

Cardio:
There are professional NFL players that are constantly on the 'line' of not being in shape enough and get tired after running the field. The magical thing about cardio is that you can condition your heart, if you want to.
Surely professional strongman's are great at sticking to diets and lifting plans, so this isn't a genetic block.

Strength:
I will assume here that they have enough strength to sacrifice a bit while they cut / condition themselves and still be bigger than the competition.

Skillset:
Perhaps I define skillset differently, but a Strong Man's skillset is in fact accomplishing great feats by dedication of a certain health style, this SKILLSET would allow them to transfer over to a different environment that requires them to be in a different shape due to the change of environment.

I'm not saying they are going to overnight be professional athletes, but surely it's a career choice worth looking at?

I honestly doubt it. If a guy as big, strong and athletic as Brock Lesnar can't make pro football, what makes you think a typically clumsy but strong powerlifter can?

The thing with transitioning to another sport, is the fact that no matter how much you train to be good at the new sport, you're competing against people who are literally the best in the world at what they do and have been training and honing their skills for that sport their whole lives.

Being good at a sport on a professional level goes way beyond what a person can do purely in a physical sense. There's the whole mental side of an athletes craft that goes un-noticed, and it's not something that can be taught even. It's the knowledge of doing what they do thousands of times and reading, reacting etc to every situation imaginable that makes them so good. They know instinctively how to react to things a normal person, given the physical tools, could still never dream of doing.

When you train for a sport as intense as strongman, it's not easy to transfer to another sport and still remain competitive. Obviously you're an athlete with a winner mentality and extreme dedication, so whatever the fuck you decide to do that kind of fits your strength and body shape, you'll be much better than the average joe instantly. But that doesn't mean you'd be able to compete with the very best.

Strongman is its own thing. It's a different world. People need to give up on that stereotype that they're all big idiots who just lift heavy things. If you actually bothered listening to some of them talk, you'd realize you're way off. It's a very extreme sport where you push yourself way past your limits every day. Those guys are incredibly impressive. It's too bad it doesn't pay more because the appeal of "making it" is very low unlike football.
