REM sleep dictates it's best to sleep 6 or 9 hours to feel completely rested.

I follow this and my sleep routine is perfect.

I sleep 6 during the week, 9 during the weekends.

Undersleeping starts to desensitize you to insulin within the week. Optimal sleep is about 8 hours. Latest research suggests that 8 hours is ideal for all ages, not just young. Lack of sleep contributes to t2dm risk in otherwise healthy young individuals.

it's all about the sleep cycles.

each sleep cycle is roughly 90 minutes and it's best to get 4-6 of them a night

To answer the OPs question, without a doubt 6 hrs will be better than 5 plus w/e nap because at 5 hrs you will be disrupting your last cycle for the night and probably feel like shit. Generally.

I find that no matter how much I sleep if I wake after a sleep cycle I will without a doubt feel better than being pulled out of a sleep cycle half way through.

I would (and have actually done this many times) feel better after 3 or so hrs of sleep than 4 or even 5 or 5.5 hrs hrs because at those points I'm being pulled out of that 3rd (or 4th) cycle and feel disoriented and groggy

All that said, if you do the same thing enough times your body will usually adjust.

just over 6 hrs of sleep is great, so is just over 7.5 hrs. 9 or so is great too.

Studies have shown that people with less than 6 hrs a night on average over a long period of time are at a higher risk for all sorts of things.
