In terms of them surviving the experiment, just because they survived doesn't mean underlying damage could have been caused that we wouldn't notice down the road.

As you said, if we keep them alive literally the only thing to do with them is keep them alive to further monitor the affects of the trials, this is naturally both costly and inefficient.

Why test on rats, then wait a year to find out the drug actually caused some sort of heart damage that slowly killed it, when you could just kill and dissect it a few days/weeks after trials to investigate?

These drug companies want their product rushed to market with approval, they'll murder a million rats before waiting a few years to find out they need to tweak the formula.

then again what to do with these rats after ? idk, find something. cant really reuse for other tests cause might cause conflict between previous test. and cant give to pet stores, too many rats and can be unsafe for pet owner or snake whatever they feed rat to lol, depending on what was done to the rat.

so eh, just was weird how they used the term sacrifice
