5'8 142lbs, lift 4 days a week, about 40mins of cardio a week. and i take krill oil, glucosamine, and black cumin seed oil.

well at least i've got that going for me! still though, if a certain diet can help me out even a little bit with these numbers, i'd like to find out what it is.

this makes sense, and i'll definitely be getting plenty of healthy fats for the following 6 months. such an extremely low fat diet turned out to be totally counter-productive in lowering my HDL. it wasn't a wise choice at all

History repeats itself.

The low-fat diet trend of the 1970s led to a prevalence of heart disease.

my own results support this

supposedly low HDL levels are just as dangerous as high LDL levels

cholesterol is important for normal function, excess cholesterol is not..you are already at a good level though, so why did you want to reduce it to be below 100mg/dL? it is more commonly known now that dietary cholesterol intake doesn't result in high cholesterol on its own since most of the cholesterol in our circulatory system was produced by our bodies, just used not from the dietary form of cholesterol..it was even found that low carb/high fat diets didn't really change the total cholesterol levels, but did alter the ratio positively, along with decreases in other CV risk markers

you could increase your intake of omegas to help get your HDL up (other steps too, just search around)..i went through this with my mother the other day as she just got hers done as well..her total cholesterol isn't much higher than yours, but her HDL was on the lower end

thanks for the input. the doc i see about these things tells me as somebody with a family history, keeping total cholesterol below 150 is healthy. since normal range is 100-150, i guess i'd just like to be as far away from that as possible. he's also said the same thing. that the biggest factors are weight, habits like smoking/exercising, and genetics. not necessarily diet.

the biggest thing for me is how heart disease is still amongst the top causes of death in America. when the most common and coveted meals like bacon/egg/cheese, pizza, and steak are a big part of american culture, and taking the "you are what you eat" thing to heart, i find it hard not to link the two together. my knowledge on how food relates to heart health is rudimentary, i know i've still got a lot to learn :P

its easy to look at diet as being the problem because so much nutritional research is coming out but theyve been through all the macros and found an association with everything and death. theyve told us that high fat diets are killer, high carb/sugar diets are killer, and theyve probably talked shit about protein. what nobody realizes is that over the past 100 years as cars and motorized scooters and bikes become common, people are doing less and less for themselves. some people probably dont stand for more than 30 minutes a day because theyre so obese. as technology has developed we have stripped ourselves of the need to perform manual labor but manual labor is what keeps you lean and healthy. the smart people realize this and go workout to replace time that used to be spent doing physical work but not everybody sees the connection there.

I still wonder why it seems researchers have never thought of this. everybody wants so badly to blame obesity on anything except inactivity. It's like they're afraid of the truth
