not sure if it is necessary or not as i have never seen it quantified to be honest..i do know that when i had a surplus paired with pre, intra, and post workout shakes made up of carbs, protein, and creatine, my strength was at its highest (and i have read research from a few sources on this, which is why i did it)

studies have found that a combination of carbs, protein, and creatine around workouts are the best for increasing strength and hypertrophy (and some of these studies had nothing to do with bodybuilding, but instead for rehabilitation purposes - i have the sources and papers i wrote on them for an exercise physiology class somewhere, but no idea where)
