Alot of it can be prevented and helped by strengthening the arch in your feet and the muscles going up the front-side of your shins. One of the exercises an athletic trainer gave me was to lay a towel out flat and pull it in with your toes. I did this a few times a day for a while when I had shin splints. Had no more problems once the original shin splints went away. They're a real bitch.

My favorite technique to avoid shin splints is to not run. Extremely effective.

This comes up a lot here. The problem is your stomping the ground in your running and it causes many many micro fractures or breaks on your bone which causes the pain. Here in Murcia body knowledge is not taught so you never know things until you bump into someone that spreads the knowledge.

Treat as a bone fracture which is what it is. Ice and elevate. Take bone supplements if you like. Big help is to not stomp the ground while you run for prevention and it usually goes away because bones heal back stronger and eventually they heal strong enough to withstand poor running form. However if you never let it heal, they don't become stronger and may worsen into an actual complete bone fracture and put you out of your activity for mandatory rest during recovery.

Good luck on your form correction, just remember to land like water. Smooooooth and absorb the impact with your body rather then beating up your bones and joints. Think of a cats landing, they also absorb the shock.

that can be what shin splints are, but it can also be many other things, not just microfractures

yeah it's webmd but it gets the point across. I got them because I have mildly flat feet and I was constntly running on uneven ground

Just comes back to your form, not properly adjusting your landing for the impact during your running. Don't stomp and u won't get shin splits. I also suffered from this until I noticed that my form took a major impact away and I have no pain on my shins or knees.

Edit: note that I tested this theory to the limit with barefoot shoes called vibrams on concrete. The way you impact the ground is crucial to enjoying your runs pain-free and longevity of your bones and joints.

Edit2: just another example of how doctors today will not be able to help you. They will not tell you it's your running form. They will not access your doing and not doing to its underlying composition in which causes the root problem. They just push drugs and tell you to keep damaging your body because eventually you'll be handicapped and they can then make tons more money off you with surgeries and more drugs.

Most important thing is start slow after you've rested/iced for like 2-3 weeks
