Why don't you do 5x5 followed by a hypertrophy routine? Summer months give you plenty of time for it. That's what I'm gonna start soon
Because if you stay consistent with 5/3/1, it is too easy to add a ton of strength.. doing it at its base you will be able to add at least 60lbs to his bench and probably 80-120lbs to his squat and dead in a year
But considering he's probably considered a beginner he will be able to make bigger jumps / shorter cycles and should be able to add way more than that... all while providing enough volume for hyp
