Fair point. Much like the decalthon argument. Some say the greatest athlete in the world is not a boxer, football player, basketball, tennis or golf player, but a decathlete. As the name implies there's 10 rather different sports they have to master, and they are pretty different from each other (some require strength, others speed, endurance, explosiveness, power, etc..) so the "overall" best athlete in the world should be some one like Roman Sebrle, Daley Thompson, Bob Mathias, Dan O'Brien or Ashton Eaton and not Mike Tyson / Muhammed Ali / Michael Jordan/Schumacher / Tiger Woods / Roger Federer / Pele etc..

It sort of begs the question... Would you rather be good at absolutely everything, or the best at one thing?

This too.

With lifting I rather focus on as many different things as I can.

Some body building lifts, some Olympic lifts, some gynastic movements like working on rings, some kettle bell movements, and so on.. This is where I think crossfit is very smart.

^^ made some good points in his posts.

Apart from the online reputation for shit form, crossfit allows for functional strength if it's done right where as a lot of gym goers really don't have a lot of functional strength. It's more just aethetics.

Muscles look good but what can they do? Where as good crossfitters have the looks good nailed down and can do a fuckload more with those muscles to boot.

I'd rather be in the latter category than the former. I'd rather be strong, than look good.

crossfit culture is largely fucked. of course i don't mean 100% of crossfitters/crossfit gyms, but a great deal of them promote unsafe lifting and people pushing their bodies beyond what they're capable of. this is where the bad rep comes from.

after reading about countless disc/rotator cuff injuries online from crossfit, watching youtube vids, i visited a crossfit gym a few miles from where i live. this crossfit gym involved skinny people lifting barbells that were WAY too heavy for them, with TERRIBLE form, and a crowd around them screaming and cheering them on. surely there are crossfit gyms/groups that don't practice this outrageous shit, and promote safe lifting, props to them. but this one was bad.

of course this mostly goes for people who are new to lifting and decide to start crossfit. for somebody who's experienced with lifting, they'll know enough about proper form and what weights they should be lifting, in that case crossfit is a great way to build functional muscle as well as endurance.
