That\s just how it is here for friends I have in Canada who are actively engaged in their research.

Also in regards to that 112k number, I guess I just don't find that to be very much given the time frame it took to acquire it.

Regardless I wish anyone luck/good fortune in any field.

I agree private sector opportunities and potential outweigh academia, but if you can get tenure at a respected institute your average salary will be at least twice that of the market, if not more, at less the time spent working. You won't "make bank" unless you become a full time professor, but your living will be much higher than average. You'll live very comfortably.

Not to mention academic background/resume can get you into private sector offices with much higher salary in an instant, because academic institutes always keep tight relations with many private sector firms which amongst other things are treating the institutes as recruitment centers. Plus, many people can and do both.

4 years of paid schooling? It's not even like youre forking over md tuition, your living expenses are mostly covered if you don't live extravagantly and you become an expert in a field.

That is a very fair/valid point. I will say that many of my professors were engaged in other private sector offices ranging from partners at lawfirms, CFO's, self employed financial practices to sitting on a BOD and collecting a fee.
