I agree private sector opportunities and potential outweigh academia, but if you can get tenure at a respected institute your average salary will be at least twice that of the market, if not more, at less the time spent working. You won't "make bank" unless you become a full time professor, but your living will be much higher than average. You'll live very comfortably.
Not to mention academic background/resume can get you into private sector offices with much higher salary in an instant, because academic institutes always keep tight relations with many private sector firms which amongst other things are treating the institutes as recruitment centers. Plus, many people can and do both.
