Beginners and undertrained individuals can easily and often do experience this phenomenon. It is often referred to as recomposition. It is much harder to accomplish this if you already have a decent physique and requires an extreme regimen that isn't sutainable for the majority of individuals.

Could have said "beginner gainz

@op: Just eat clean as possible while spreading protein intake through out your meals and have caseine (cottage cheese is perfect, if you can eat it plain, you are golden) before bed. Sooner you get into the habit of eating clean and being strict with your food intake, the cleaner your future bulks will be because of that discipline. Avoiding that stupid " eat everything" bulk mentality is nice because it's just an excuse to want to be fat.

you cant build muscle and cut bf at the same time

how much do you weigh?

though it is possible to maintain a healthy bf% and gain decent muscle at the same time

some people get excellent results with bulking/cutting phases, and some people just dont believe in it. it REALLY all depends on what your goals are and what your body is like right now.

so i'll be the 2nd one to ask, how much do you weigh? and what kind of physique are you trying to get?
