patellofemoral syndrome isnt really in the strictest sense an injury. a syndrome is a collection of symptoms experienced by an individual, perhaps without an easily identifiable cause (or with multiple possible causes). patellofemoral syndrome is just knee pain in the posterior aspect of the patella without cartilage damage.

most likely hypothesis at this point is a misalignment of the patella causing tracking issues over the end of the femur, i would suggest you try to analyze your squat because caving knees can cause tracking issues with the patella.

Yea tracking issue is exactly the problem that my sports doctor thinks is happening. Specifically, he wrote this prescription for physio: ""Requires physiotherapy to help with strengthening and recruitment of VMO, strengthening of glut med, +/- patellar taping."

He said that my my knee is most likely tracking outwards so I need to work on strengthening muscles inside the thigh and stretch the muscles outside the thigh.

I got a sleeve this week to try and help. I haven't squatted in a few weeks, but next time I do I'll definitely take a look at my form. I don't think my knees cave though ... but I don't think I've looked in a while either - so could be happening for sure.

Using the taping can help to find out what is really wrong... had the same problem.
Also, physio to strengthen and improve function really helps to reduce future pain recurrence.
VMO issues are probably one of the top reasons as to why young guys like us have this pain.

Make sure to break in wearing your sleeve by wearing it a little at a time and moving in it. This is especially true if it is tight or it might cause further pain.
