exercise stimulates lean mass retention and improves lipolysis, expends kcal, improves blood lipid and sugar regulation, along with many other health benefits that im sure i dont need to explain to you. im big on plugging the importance of exercise over diet right now for general health so thats probably why i said what i did. still i would argue the title doesnt strictly imply energy balance, which would be more important than exercise for body composition changes, but diet overall carries associations of food quality and eating strategies which i would still say fall second to exercise

Ah in terms of general health, sure. I won't disagree. Though being lean is still far healthier than being active and overweight. And you can't really say exercise is more important as diet literally determines if you will or will not lose fat. But I do see your point :P

Plus, peep this link: http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0040503

It says in the abstract: "As expected, physical activity level, PAL, was greater among Hadza foragers than among Westerners. Nonetheless, average daily energy expenditure of traditional Hadza foragers was no different than that of Westerners after controlling for body size. The metabolic cost of walking (kcal kg−1 m−1) and resting (kcal kg−1 s−1) were also similar among Hadza and Western groups. The similarity in metabolic rates across a broad range of cultures challenges current models of obesity suggesting that Western lifestyles lead to decreased energy expenditure."

So, it's now thought activity levels aren't really a major factor in the obesity epidemic.. which makes sense when you consider probably 300-500 extra kcals per day expelled via adding some resistance training/cardiovascular training.
