I eat a trailmix with raisins, m&ms, and mixed nuts. Would that be a good mixture?

That perfectly fine.

You were only 145lbs, so eating isn't a psychological issue for you.

No real reason to limit what you eat.

When I say food volume I mean, by definition you have 2 big Mac combos and couple shakes and call it a day. But that may leave you hungrier then need be

So could I get those calories by protein shakes? Or what else is high on calories?

Lots of things, you need to find your bmr.

Bmr calculator gives a very rough estimate, factor in daily activity.

Find out how many calories you truly need, 40lbs was a lot of gain in the time frame.

Then fill that void with food of your choosing

start slow, find an exercise routine that works for you and that you enjoy.
start limiting yourself to pop for example. if you have 5 a day. every week drop 1 or 2 and switch it with water.

changing too many things too fast can sometimes destroy a person.

if you really want it, you will get it.

best of luck
