At some point you'll be comfortable enough to flex any muscle you like on command and will go to the gym and perform the exercises the way they should. It should definitely change how you workout.

Enjoy![/QUOTE]

This is so important, people are really missing out by not being in touch with the body.
A good example to try, since a lot of you seem to be having trouble with biceps.. Just before you go into the concentric phase of the bicep curl, be sure to to FEEL your bicep activate, really focus on that. I know that sounds silly, because logic dictates, that if you are doing a bicep curl, the bicep must be activated anyway and that is not entirely untrue, but it is also untrue in the sense that you are not getting an effective exercise unless you are purposely focusing on the muscle with your brain. A lot of people are too quick to cry plateu, when in reality, the bicep is not improving because other muscle groups, such as the deltoid are contributing to the lift via compensatory movement, because of terrible form. It bugs me so much to have people ask me why their biceps are not improving, and then I ask them to perform a curl / witness them using contraction from the deltoid to gain momentum into a lift that is meant to be isolated at the bicep. Some people even throw their lower back into it... rofl.

This is just one muscle as an example of course, so apply it to every muscle you are trying to isolate. I can pretty much guarentee, that if you f ocus on keeping your elbow locked in place at the pelvis, and focus on feeling the bicep, and bicep only activate before you engage in the concentric phase of your lift.. your current max weight / reps will drop drastically, and you will start to see gains again by lifting less weight

One of the good examples is usually the chest flies with which people tend to use their front deltoids to mimic the "arc" motion and their chest to press through it. However, what you should really be doing is focus on both of your pecs flexing towards each other, while locking your arms in place, causing the "arc" motion.

Your posts lately speak right to my situation!
Every time I go crazy with flies on chest day, I get a bad kind of sore where my front deltoid and pecs meet! Still stingy at certain ranges of motions a day and a half later as I type... I am probably using bad form.
I ought to have somebody at the gym check my form on various movements, cuz I'm finally getting kind of heavy on deadlifts and stuff. What if my form is really bad!?! (I think my back is straight and my head is up, idk about my stance...)
Gotta love flexing when you're pumped! I do flex a lot throughout the day. Hope nobody notices how in love with myself I am.

Although I don't work out (regrettably) , this was an extremely fascinating read.

I do it everyday broski! :D

Learning to flex individual muscles really helps to ensure I do my exercise properly. No more recruiting help from muscle groups that don't belong in the movement.
I am suprized that this isn't the #1 thing taught by trainers from the beginning.
