It just needs to be a big picture thing. If you don't have a purpose in what you're doing, you're doing it wrong. This relates to everything you're doing in life. Not everything needs to be a big deal, but if your purpose in doing something is to have fun, have fun or stop doing it. If your purpose is to get healthier, stick to it. If your purpose is to be the best bassoon player of all-time, start practicing all day, every day.
That's about it, post #2 was correct.
I mean no disrespect, but either you're for lifting or you're not. Motivation is temporary so you need to feed it daily. But if you have a bigger purpose you won't need daily doses of motivation. If you don't have a purpose in area 1 of your life, you probably won't have it in areas 2 or 3, either. But if you find purpose in one area of your life, it may/may not spread to others. My preference is to be in balance with work, family, volunteering, fitness/sports, learning, etc.. I achieve balance by wanting to be excellent in each of my pursuits. I avoid letting one thing steal my time by looking at what is important rather than by focusing on what is urgent. Nobody is perfect, but I promise you that if you fill your life with purpose and if you bring that purpose into everything you do, you'll be better off than 90% of the population.
