I'm already pretty buff mates but being an engineer I sometimes get 4-6 hours of sleep and then go to the gym

How much can sleep actually affect the gains? I know ideal would be 7-8 hours of sleep

A bit.

So just compensate if you feel like you need more rest. IE, decrease workload.

A decent amount.
Your recovery gets way worse, the risk of injury increases, your cortisol levels will increase the following day aswell and it also impairs the immune system.

Iirc driving after ~4 hours of sleep can be compared to driving drunk due to cognition being so much slower.

Yeah I already go to the gym at 2:30am then go straight to work at 5am and sometimes my schedule does not allow me to get the amount of sleep I need. I love the gym very much but I feel like I'm killing myself sometimes

Cheers

Decrease workload (a lot) the days you can't get enough sleep.
Risk for burnout and depression is significantly higher in individuals who physically exhaust themselves whilst being deprived of sleep - which leads to cognitive exhaustion.

Rule of thumb:

1 day with bad sleep: ok
2 days with bad sleep: rip
