I care about aesthetics and fitness levels but have never enjoyed working out, apart from a few things. As a result I never have a consistent gym routine, it's always a month here or there which isn't great for gains and I've stalled at 170 for ages.

I was thinking of starting boxing to find some enjoyment in fitness and act as an extra source of motivation in getting a routine. Anyone have any experience with boxing or something similar? I have no idea where to start, how demanding it is, whether it would be too exhausting to keep a weightlifting schedule in tandem with it, etc

Not a fan of running, whether it be outside or in a gym, same with cycling..

I can honestly say that boxing is the only form of cardio I truly enjoy, it also happens to be one of the most intensive forms of cardio.

As mentioned I sure hope you're not a on a bulk, because it's not going to happen if you're serious about boxing.

You'll sweat more than you ever have, your core will have never felt the type of soreness you'll get after the first few sessions, but if you enjoy putting literally everything you have into any type of training, boxing is for you.

It's not something you'll get into if you do it on your own, trust me when I say this, if you wanna get into boxing find somewhere you can be trained. There are usually tons of boxing gyms that will work on your form right from the get go, which is the most important aspect to learn. You don't want to get into bad habits by training yourself, as you'll take even longer to get out of them/learn the proper way.

Only after a few weeks/months of being trained would I consider grabbing a heavy bag for at home, as mentioned you'll be far less motivated and far too experienced to benefit much from getting one early on, training would be a far better investment.

edit: You can still workout just fine while doing boxing, I've hit the weights/bag same day on several occasions, just remember you're burning a shit load of calories in every boxing session and you'll need to be constantly refueling. If you've ever had a problem being hungry try boxing, literally drains you of everything ^^

i am looking to bulk a bit, not massively though. if i did a hypertrophy routine for the next 6 weeks, put on some weight, then maintained that while boxing, id be happy

This. Don't sign up to just any McDojo. But yea combat sports is like the only thing I enjoy besides lifting (I don't even lift). Better get your cardio up

I did kickboxing/bjj. Hated when we did BJJ but loved the kickboxing part. I'm thinking of getting back into as well since I too am kind of getting bored of just lifting and playing hockey.

If you maintain while boxing you're doing it wrong, you will get more lean so long as you're not stuffing your face with McDicks all the time (and if you do you wont perform well at all during boxing).

Go ahead and bulk a bit, but expect to lose weight from boxing.
