It was welcome weekend at my university this weekend, so thousands of people along the streets of where all the frat/sorority's are. I was at a friends house and walked down the street to another friends house thinking I would be alright. But of course because I had one opened beer on my I had 5 cops come out of no where and grab me by the back of the arm and gave me an open intox, which here it is a misdemeanor and now I have to go to court. Anyone know If there is a way of getting out of it and just paying fine, or diversion program, etc. This is my first offense too by the way.

Damn, rookie mistake. But lawyer up if you want to have a chance of getting it dismissed

I keep getting told lawyer would be a waste of money though because it should be atleast reduced to civil infraction.

They were handing them out like candy friday night, which is when i got mine.

It's gonna cost you more, but if you get a local lawyer you can be more confident the charge will be reduced. He'll probably know the judge and get it dropped tbh. but i haven't gone over minor legal issues like this in law school yet, so am not that useful.

You know what the punishment is if charges are not dropped?

If you know something simple like having open alcohol on you in public is illegal why even do it?.. it's a pretty simple fucking problem to avoid in the first place. It's not a cops job to argue whether or not the law is just, it's their job to enforce it.
