So we got bored at work yesterday and a couple of co workers and I tested our rest pulse with the built in heart rate monitor on the Galaxy S5. Results were 50, 51, 54, 57, 60, 61. then I had a go...

Nah lol, maybe if I have an upcoming presentation and I'm completely unprepared but not in any normal situation.

I've always been athletic but with the endurance of a 45 year old cripple

Just downloaded an app on my phone and my results after three tests were:

68, 186 (lol!!) and 78.

Woke up 1 hour ago, eating a pizza and drank a can of coke + mountain dew

in the military during our max pulse tests my rest pulse was 104 using proper equipment, not a smartphone app.. and my troop leader accused me of purposely spiking my heart rate to get out early

a lot of little factors can easily influence HR on a minute by minute basis so one measurement isnt indicative of a true value. you need an average over some time to get a good idea, but yes if your resting HR is 110 then you might have a problem. first thing that comes to mind for me is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. talk to your family physician and see if you can get a referral to a cardiologist if you're worried

e: i think you should go get your HR checked by a physician at the very least and he can determine whether or not you're at risk for HCM. it is a very serious condition that could lead to sudden heart failure and is common across all age groups, especially in the athletic. not trying to worry you but it can be almost asymptomatic until a sudden cardiac event occurs and then its too late. doesnt hurt to get a professional opinion

Check your pulse right now, up to 30 seconds, then multiply that number by 2, and do this 3 times with 3 results. Then post.

Check it yourself without an app, radial artery. Gogogo!

He'd have other symptoms if he had this.
