While the graphical interface was indeed annoying as shit, this isn't even close to the real reason why Vista failed.

Zero stability, zero reliability, lots of compatibility issues and lots of phony drivers. Plus, it just happened that Apple had a decent alternative on the market, so people could actually punish Microsoft for their incompetence by switching to a competitor. Milestone in the history of operating systems.
