So for the past 6 months I've had some exciting news that I wasn't able to talk about. I was given a job offer by the CIA. This job seemed perfect. It was going to be a $82k a year salary, a $12k hiring bonus, of course amazing benefits including free education. Not to mention, it's the CIA, how fucking cool is that!? But unfortunately, not all that glitters is gold. A few weeks ago I went in for my polygraph and psych evaluation for my security clearance and today I come home to find a letter telling me that the CIA is rescinding their offer. Officially, I have not been denied a security clearance. My offer has been rescinded for no official reason, but some possibilities are the position is no longer needed, the project has lost funding, etc..
As you can expect, I was pretty heartbroken. Earlier this year, I had a chance to test for a Summer internship with Amazon. Although not the best place to work, it was still an amazing chance. They were going to pay $6k a month as well as pay for my relocation and housing for the Summer. If I did well there I could leave with a job offer for when I graduate. The test went pretty well I thought, but I guess I didn't test well enough because I wasn't extended an offer. I'm not going to lie, I spent the evening crying when I got the rejection email. I also got blackout drunk. I just wanted some proof that I could hang with the best computer science students but I didn't measure up.
So today, when I got this second rejection letter for an extraordinary opportunity, I was once again crushed. I even shed a few tears. I'm not the toughest man in the world. But this time I wanted things to be different. I pulled myself together. I'm not going to cry, I'm not going to drink... I even went online an ordered a picture frame. I've decided to frame my rejection letter. I want it to be a reminder of how nothing in life is a sure thing, and that I just need to keep working harder.
So this thread is my confession: GC, I'm a schmuck. I'm just a schmuck with a semester left of college with no job offers. But I'm going to keep trying. I'm not going to stop until I'm one of the best software developers in the business. And that is my promise to you GC. Until then, I 'm just going to be a good student and a good human being, and for now I'm okay with that.
