If it's FiOS service, have them enable the Ethernet port at the optical network terminal (ONT - the box they will mount that brings the fiber connection into the residence). Then connect your own router to it, and skip using their gateway (unless you have FiOS TV as well, in which case, just connect the Verizon gateway behind your router, and connect the TV equipment to that).
