Both, I go to the gym after work so I bring with me some fruit to have when I end work. Then gym, then home and dinner.
If I don't eat before the gym I'm starving, as I have lunch at 12:00.

If you are serious about gymming you should eat 7-8times a day. More meals, but smaller. Keeps a better balance for the body. =)

1 eat a meal with protein and carbs at home
2 get to the exercise-house in less then 1 hour
3 drink water just before you start, from the bathroom
4 do exercises
5 eat a protein bar immediately after u finish. the bar needs again few carbs in it

worked for me

edit: carbs are needed so your body doesn't burn the muscles themselves
