i'd assume for a resume builder for some who want to be real cops some day. And an ego boost for some who desire to wear a badge but never will.

plus from what i've seen some aux police can carry if they have a license to, they simply aren't provided weapons by the precinct. An auxiliary officer was recently convicted of manslaughter IIRC, was some old guy.
