Why is the United States referred to as a democracy whenever I look up democratic countries but it's not listed as a republic instead?

The United States is a Representative Republic. This basically means that, while our laws are passed via a democratic process, this process is carried out by people elected to be representatives of the population as a whole.

The Republic part means that our government is headed by an elected President.

"A constitutionally limited representative democratic republic [where] . . . the constitution, limits the power of government. We elect representatives, so it's not a pure democracy. But we do elect them by majority rule so it is democratic."
