Well, Voldemort was the most powerful wizard in the world at the time, so it seems fair that a 17 year old wouldn't be able to take him without a little help from the Elder Wand and his mother.

edit: Besides, Dumbledore is always saying that love is the most powerful magic of all, so it makes sense that Harry would need that to win.
