A fraction is the top number divided by the bottom number. How is a division sign not a fraction of the two numbers?
It is a fraction, but you're dividing the wrong numbers. Everyone knows that for this equation:
1+4
-----
1+9
You get 1/2. You solve for the top, then solve for the bottom, then divide the top by the bottom. But, this equation is
actually:
(1+4)
------
(1+9)
Both the equation in the numerator and the equation in the denominator are separate equations. You and a few others are interpreting 6÷2(1+2) as:
6
------
2(1+2)
But in reality, it's not. The ÷ is not a fraction bar. The ÷ is a division symbol, and according to the order of operations, you solve as such:
6÷2 = 3
1+2 = 3
3*3 = 9
