Just think if they added a basic math test to join the site, ~60% wouldn't be allowed to nerd out here

But that isn't how you would interpret it. For the 80th time, the ÷ isn't a fraction bar.

A fraction is the top number divided by the bottom number. How is a division sign not a fraction of the two numbers?

497,833 people must have failed elementary school math.

It's 9, end of discussion -_-

/e:

You, sir, are incorrect. You are right that you do the parentheses first though

6 / 2 (1 + 2)

6 / 2 (3)
which is the same as
6 / 2 * 3
3 * 3
9

multiplication is before division

while you do have a point and there is truth behind it, it does not fall into this case. your dividing the top number by the bottom number right? okay thats fine... except you gotthings to do first which makes that bottom number disapear

I'll admit I misused pemdas in my original post, neither Multiplication nor Division get preference, you read left to right.

In the form of the original question:

6÷2(1+2)
6÷2*3
3*3
=9

When wrote as:

6/2(1+2)

You can interpret it two ways:

6/2(1+2)
6/2*3 (Again, left to right, / = ÷)
3*3
=9

OR

6(FRACTION)2(1+2)
6/(2*3)
6/6
=1

THE CONCLUSION

The question is poorly wrote and would never appear on an exam like that.
The question would VERY CLEARLY be:
6/2(1+2) or 6/(2(1+2))

okay lets break it down

BEDMAS

Brackets first

(1+2) = 3

Since this was bracketed, it need to be x with the number to the left of the bracket....

2(3) = 6

6/6 = what?

Wow Jsp. Its sad that majority of you think 9 is right. If you've had your hand on 1 all along, Congrats guys, We are a dieing breed.
