You are right that a gasline explosion may be the cause, however (ignoring the reports of additional devices being found, for the sake of my point let's pretend there were none), bombs the size of a couple fists aren't too hard to keep unnoticed and produce explosions that size.
From my time in the National Guard, we've had the chance to throw a couple sappers here and there. They're no bigger than a fist and can blow a car pretty easily. My point is that many high powered explosives are a lot smaller than people think they are.
We're talking about people getting military-grade explosives though. Generally (through our training and my knowledge), most people who attack with explosives are likely to use either fertilizer (which is only deadly on a massive scale, I.E. Timothy Mcvaughe(sp?)) or Pipebombs (blackpowder being the easiest to make). There are others, but once again, they are the more common forms of attack.
Even the radicals in the middle east use offshoots of those two variants because they are EASY and CHEAP.
