I didn't change it at all, I was inserting parentheses in the proper place to try to explain it better. That's not the actual equation, but that is how you solve for it.

You cannot add parentheses where you did without changing the outcome. This is why you are getting 9 not 1.

You're wrong, you added a parentheses that wasn't there to begin with, therefore you are the one interpreting it wrong.
