I'd say that it's one of two possible ways of interpreting 6/2(1+2)

Feel free to correct me, I may be wrong. But please do use an actual argument and not just "that's not right"

Because you start with linear calculations. The only way to do it is explained in my above post.

There is no such equation 6÷2(1+2)
Because there is no one answer to it

This.

This question is completely irrelevant because you will NEVER see it on an exam, EVER.

The last time I used the division symbol (÷) was in elementary school for questions like:

10 ÷ 2 = ?

"÷" and "/" are the exact same thing. Just because it's in a different syntax doesn't mean it's wrong.

Why? I might be missing something, I have a tendency to overlook obvious stuff.

because the ONLY way it is possible to say the 6 is separate is if it's 6/2(1+2)=??

and even then it's foolish to make that mistake

with an actual division sign, it is part of the equation NOT separate, thus you work it in as shown (6÷2)*(1+2)=

wrong

by your logic & his

5-3+2 = 0 or 4

both of you don't take any major that requires math

I can't find the division sign, but the division sign and "/" are the same...

No, you can't. The only way to solve it is to start with 6, divide it by two, then multiply that quotient by the equation in the parentheses.

you can also just distribute the (6/2), same thing.
(6/2) + (12/2) = 3 + 6 = 9
