You could, though you could really only reasonably have a fairly small group if you really wanted to run the game, so it still wouldn't be an MMORPG.

There are text-based MMORPGs, but that requires the actual game to be played through the text parts. Having a big chat where people can look for a small, four-player group to play the actual game does not an MMO make.

You could. And you'd be playing a game within the chat. The chat, however, is not a game. And the game you'd be playing, unless you had a 1000+ person DND game, wouldn't be an MMO.

But that game wouldn't be Diablo 3. It would be Dungeons and Dragons. Therefore Diablo 3 would only be the medium through which you played a terrible MMORPG version of D&D.

ETA: Because you could play the exact same game the exact same way through IRC. Do you think IRC is a MMORPG?

That's because it's never actually an MMORPG. It's a game you could turn into a different MMORPG in a very silly way that no one has ever done nor will ever do, much like you could with IRC.
