If you follow the PEMDAS (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, And Subtraction) Acronym taught to every single person that's had basic algebra it goes as follows:

6÷2(1+2)

(1.) Parenthesis First: (1+2)=

                                    3.

(2.) Multiplication Second: 2x3=

                                        6.

(3.) Division Last: 6÷6=

                                        1.

you're a dumbass

It's sad how some people think the 2(1+2) can't be separated

Or even to think that it's (2(1+2)), but yeah

Sorry for calling you a dumbass, I can't blame you for educators teaching you wrong.

To use PEMDAS, you need to understand it's not 6 steps... but 4 steps: (P) (E) (MD) (AS)
1. Parenthesis
2. Exponents
3. Multiplication/Division (DONE FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, EVEN IF DIVISION IS FIRST)
4. Addition/Subtraction (SAME ^^^)

Now of course there will be different answers, It depends on what country you were taught in.

In the United States the PEMDAS Mnemonic is used while in other English speaking countries other Mnemonic are used such as:

BEDMAS, BIMDAS, BODMAS, BOMDAS, BERDMAS, PERDMAS, and BPODMAS.

The Facebook question was a means of determining how much more different every country taught mathematics. Sort of like a scientific survey.

It's not of HOW it's taught... but if people actually understand that Multiplication/Division and Addition/Subtraction is of the same rank

Exactly, that was the means for the controversial problem, to determine if basic algebra was being taught correctly.

2 x 3
